Insights from experience: economic disadvantage, suicide and self-harm
Suicide is complex and is rarely caused by one thing. However, there is strong evidence of associations between financial difficulties, mental health and suicide.
This report explores what the relationship between economic disadvantage, suicide risk and self-harm looks like in people’s own words.
As well as describing the approach taken, the report draws out the voices and experiences of a diverse group of people. It is a curation of stories against common themes and people’s reflections on the change they would like to see.
This report was published in March 2023 by the Suicide Prevention Consortium, which is made up of four organisations: Samaritans (lead), National Suicide Prevention Alliance, Support After Suicide Partnership and With You.
