Latest newsletter from Suicide Prevention Scotland - September 2025

The team at Public Health Scotland have published the latest Suicide Prevention Scotland newsletter (September 2025).

Created for people working in suicide prevention, it provides a helpful round-up of all the latest news from across our wider network.

In Angus we learn about a new Community Wellbeing Centre called The Beacon that's opened in Arbroath. Open seven days a week from 12pm to Midnight, any one can drop in if they are experiencing emotional distress.

"We know that people experiencing emotional distress should be able to access help as quickly as possible and it’s wonderful to see that become a reality with the opening of the new centre," says Angus HSCP chief officer Jillian Galloway.

Hillcrest Futures is to run the centre, and director John Booth said: “We’re proud to be delivering such an essential service in Angus through The Beacon.

"Our team is passionate about providing a safe, welcoming space where people can feel heard and supported, especially during their most vulnerable moments.

"The Beacon will offer caring, compassionate support to help people on their journey to better mental wellbeing.”

Elsewhere, we reflect on the new case study resources developed looking at examples of practice around suicide prevention in schools.

There's an opportunity for colleagues working in higher education to join our National Suicide Prevention Network for Colleges and Universities or our new Children & Young People Local Suicide Forum.

The launch of a new Enabling Conversations toolkit for young people and trusted adults in partnership with V&A Dundee is also previewed.

We also report on our Creating Hope Podcast series launched in the summer.

You can watch a feature with Nic, the founder and co-organisers of the Living Warriors Project in Edinburgh in which they share their experiences of setting up and facilitating a community-based peer support group for survivors of attempted suicide.

There's a preview of a workshop planned for November with Scottish Recovery Network, exploring the role of peer support in suicide prevention.

And you can find out about some of the latest events planned for World Suicide Prevention Day.
