I’m worried about the person I care for - how can I support them?

Advice about how to support someone you care for who may have thoughts of suicide.

Early support matters

You don’t need to wait until someone is in crisis to show concern.

Early action - whether it’s checking in, offering company or a chat, or helping them find support - can reduce the risk of things getting worse.

Stigma and silence can create barriers.

But reaching out early, even if you’re unsure, can help someone feel less alone and more willing to talk.

The earlier someone gets support, the better their chance of recovery.

A conversation could save a life

Asking someone whether they are thinking about suicide could save their life.

It’s a common belief that asking someone about suicide might make it more likely to happen.

But research shows that it is not dangerous to ask - you could actually save a life.

If the answer is yes, the person with thoughts of suicide can be supported.

Asking can make them feel seen, relieved and less alone.

And if the answer is no, no harm is done.

They are thinking about suicide

If someone tells you they have are thinking about suicide, treat what they are saying seriously and sensitively.

Creating a safety plan

Together, you might create a simple safety plan.

A safety plan doesn’t need to be complicated. It can be a simple note or conversation about:

  • What helps when things feel overwhelming

  • Who they can call (including you, services, or trusted people)

  • What they can do to stay safe

This kind of planning can offer reassurance and a sense of control for both of you.
